Blog - Why BC Contractors Need a Portfolio Website

A BC contractor lives and dies by their photo galleries. If yours is a Facebook album from 2019, you are losing high-ticket jobs to contractors who show their work properly.

Industry

A homeowner in Upper Mission is planning a $180,000 kitchen reno. They are not calling the guy with the cheapest quote. They are calling the contractor whose portfolio looks most like the kind of work they want. That entire decision is made on a phone screen, scrolling through photos, comparing finishes, materials, taste.

If your portfolio is a Facebook album from 2019 with grainy cell photos, you are not in the running. That is the bar now. And it is not a high bar, but most BC contractors are still under it.

What most BC contractor websites get wrong

  1. No real portfolio. A single page called "our work" with four low-resolution photos. That is not a portfolio, that is a placeholder.
  2. Photos with no context. A photo of a finished kitchen tells me nothing. I want to know where, what was the scope, what was the budget range, what was the timeline, what was unique.
  3. No project pages. Each significant project should have its own page with photos, a short write-up, and the specs. That is how Google ranks you and how homeowners actually evaluate you.
  4. Slow galleries. Giant unoptimized photos that kill mobile load times.
  5. No trust signals. Licensing, insurance, associations, and warranties should be visible. High-ticket jobs live on trust.

What actually works for BC contractors

  • A proper portfolio section with a page per project. Whole-home renos in Kelowna. Kitchen remodels in Glenmore. New builds in Wilden. Custom decks in Lake Country. Each one a searchable, rankable page.
  • Real photography. Hire a photographer once a year and let me architect the site around great photos.
  • Case studies with numbers. Budget range, timeline, scope, unique challenges. This turns browsers into callers.
  • Clear service pages. New builds, whole-home renos, kitchen and bath, additions, decks and outdoor living. Each targeting a distinct search.
  • Local context. Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland, Lake Country, Vernon. Each region has slightly different markets.

See my work

The portfolio includes several landscaping and service businesses that share the same "portfolio-driven" pattern a contractor needs. The work I did for Empire Landscaping and Gaia Landscaping in particular maps directly to how I would build a contractor site. Also worth reading the construction industry page and the Kelowna locations page.

Why hiring a local BC developer matters for contractors

A national agency does not understand the Kelowna and Okanagan construction market. They will not know that Wilden, Upper Mission, and Kettle Valley homeowners expect a certain level of finish. They will not know that Lake Country has a lot of acreage custom builds with different expectations than a downtown Kelowna condo reno.

Local knowledge. I know the neighborhoods, the builders, the finish levels. I can write copy that resonates with the actual buyers you want.

Fast communication. Text me, I reply. Project updates, photo swaps, same-day.

Fair pricing. You pay for the site, not a team of account managers.

Shipping. Three to four weeks for a proper contractor portfolio site. Faster if your photos are already sorted.

FAQ

How many projects should be in my portfolio? Start with your eight to ten best. Quality over quantity. Add new ones as you finish great work.

Do I need case studies or just photo galleries? Both. Galleries hook people. Case studies close them. A short write-up with scope, timeline, and a client quote adds credibility.

Should I show budget ranges? Yes, ranges are fine and actually help. "Projects in this gallery ranged from $200K to $500K" qualifies leads before they call you.

How much does a contractor portfolio site cost in BC? $4,000 to $10,000 depending on scope, photography, and number of project pages. A serious custom build pays for itself with one closed job.

How long before I see results? A better site converts better immediately. Rankings take three to six months with consistent content.
